Abstract:
Co-firing of coal and biomass has become an alternative way in achievement of GHG
reduction. However, its combustion performance is still an issue, since biomass contains lower
energy intensity and higher volatile matter than the fossil fuel. In this work, the pulverized
combustion of blend fuel, coal and Palm kernel shell (PKS), at 100:0, 90:10 and 75:25 by weight,
was tested using the burner with a pre-combustion chamber configuration. Investigation was set
at 300kW thermal input with 45% of excess air. The temperature profiles and flue gas emission
at steady state results were discussed. As expected, the axial temperatures were highest when
firing with pure coal and orderly decreased with 90:10 and 75:25 cases. This was due to the high
energy intensity of coal. However, the greater expansion of high temperature zone of 75:25,
comparing to that of 90:10, was observed. The higher fraction of PKS, thus biomass volatile,
released at lower temperature than coal, led to the early stage of combustion taking place near
the burner zone. Moreover, CO emission of the 75:25 case was lower than 90:10 since the fast
volatile burning was certainly come up with the fast burning of char
