The use of English loan words of Thai people on Twitter Application

Abstract: The omnipresent presence of English loan words in Thai language is increasingly reflected on social media, especially Twitter. This research studied the types of English loan words most used in Thailand and popular topics using English loan words on Twitter in Thailand. The qualitative research method was employed to analyze the types of English loan words used on Twitter and thematic analysis were employed to categorize data by topics for which English loan words are used. The results revealed that transliterations were most employed on Twitter in Thailand. Transliterations were used in 94.12 percent of cases, or 96 out of 102 words. Loan blends were occasionally used on Twitter. Loan blends appeared in 5.88 percent, or six out of 102 words. In addition, the top three most popular topics using English loan words in Thai language included opinions on celebrities, movies and television programs, music and art. 23.56 percent of Twitter users in Thailand employed English loan words for opinions on celebrities, or 24 of 102 words, while 15.69 percent used them to discuss movies and dramas, or 16 of 102 words, and 8.82 percent or nine of 102 words, about music and art. These findings may be useful for further related research
