Abstract:
This study aimed to analyse Thai-English code mixing used by Thai guest speakers on We Need To Talk Podcast Seasons 1-3. Forty episodes which have Thai or Half-Thai guest speakers were selected. The content in the Been There Done That part of the show which approximately lasts 20-30 minutes was investigated. The framework regarding types of code-mixing proposed by Muysken (2000) and Suwito (1983) were adapted into the criteria to classify types of code-mixing in the show. The researcher took two types of code-mixing process, namely Insertion and Alternation, from Muyskens theory, and added Literal Translation as one of the classifications. In addition, the forms of the inserting elements, suggested by Suwito, were adapted to give deeper details. The findings revealed that there were 203 code-mixing instances. Insertion was found the most frequently, while only a few literal translation and alternation were found. When looking specifically at Insertion, the insertion of nouns or noun phrases was found the most, followed by the insertion of phrases and the insertion of filler words. It can be concluded from the findings that Thai artists sometimes code-mix when they have to give an interview in English, and they tend to insert Thai nouns into their English-dominant speech. It might draw from the reason that Thai words convey the message quicker and easier when both the speaker and interviewee are Thai
