Abstract:
This research aims at three objectives; 1) to survey the history of
Abhidhammatthasangaha and Abhidhammatthavibhavini Pancika Atthayojana, 2) to
analyze its Pali terms in Abhidhammatthavibhavini Pancika Atthayojana based on
Saddavisesa texts. It was a documentary research.
The results of research revealed that the most venerable Anuruddha, an
southern Indian, was born at Kaveri port, Kancipura, Cola state. Later on, he moved
to live at Tanjo, Tamba state, near Indian ocean, sometime he stayed at
Mahameghavana temple near Sovannamali stupa, Anuradhapuri, Sri Lanka.
Abhidhammatthasangaha was compiled by request of Namba, his closed pupil. There
were the former scriptures written by him; Paramatthavinicchaya and
Namarupapariccheda, then the said Abhidhammatthasangaha was composed at last,
therefore it was compared as a paragon, being well cut and perished, superior than
the rests of diamond from past until the present.
Venerable Nanakittithera of Lanna, was born at Chiangmai province. He
was elder than Ven. Sirimangalathera and lived at Panasaram (Jackfruit garden)
located in north-west of Chiangmai. He was a master of Tilokaraja king and went to
Sri Lanka in the reign of Parakramabahu VI and Bhuvanekabahu VI (1955-2014 B.E.).
His writing works were totally 8 scriptures concerned with disciplines, Abhidhamma
and Pali grammar including Abhidhammatthavibhavini Pancika Atthayojana within
which was compiled at Panasaram monastery on 2045 B.E.
The significance of this Yojana text was that Nanakittithera with great
knowledge and skills on Buddhist doctrine had proposed the method of composition
into 4 types; 1) Vakyanusambandha (sentence syntax), 2) analysis form of Samasa,
Taddhita and Kitaka with word composition which contains of word building process
by using stanza from various Saddavisesa texts such as Kaccayana etc. with 238
stanzas in first chapter. Among these stanzas, Vidhisutta appeared mostly counts 228
in total, 3) meaning of Upasagga and Nipata, 4) relation of Pali sentence. Because of
his knowledge of Pali and Sanskrit grammar and proficiency on Dhamma and Vinaya,
Nanakittithera was able to complete the profound Yojana text and applauded by
various scholars in the past and even in recent time.
