Abstract:
This research was to study value chain analysis, production cost and logistics cost of lemongrass and phlai production in order to set the guidelines for value creation in lemongrass and phlai production. In each plant, farmer data were collected into 2 groups. For lemongrass producers, data were collected from lemongrass production with chemical and lemongrass production with GAP standard. In case of phlai producers, chemical production farmer and non-chemical production farmer data were collected. It was found that lemongrass production with GAP standard included quality analysis of soil and water, contaminant analysis and full record of production activities. As a result, the GAP lemongrass production yield was higher than the chemical lemongrass production by 530 kg/rai while the production cost was lower than the chemical lemongrass production by 0.26 baht/kg due to a lower raw materials usage and the logistics cost of the chemical lemongrass production was higher than that of GAP lemongrass production by 0.10 baht/kg. In addition, GAP lemongrass price was higher than that of chemical lemongrass by 4.48 baht/kg. In case of phlai production, the non-chemical phlais yield was lower than the chemical phlai yield by 1,810 kg/rai while production cost was higher than the chemical phlai production by 0.52 baht/kg due to its lower yield. Non chemical phlais price was 0.80 baht/kg higher than that of chemical phlai. Furthermore, the logistics cost of the non-chemical phlai production was 0.24 baht/kg higher than that of the chemical phlai production. The guidelines for value creation in the lemongrass and phlai production were to help farmers develop and improve their production systems to compete in the global market, meet the consumer satisfaction and in the end to have higher income and profit for farmers by product differentiation strategy through quality standards, including GAP standard and organic standard. These standards could reduce the production cost and also increase the yield. Furthermore, process innovation and technology especially phlais tissue culture technology which could help reduce the production time and yield the required quality and concentration of active agents. Production knowledge transfer, zoning, water resources management and market promotion must also be instilled to encourage farmers to switch into production system with quality standards or certification.
