Strengths and weaknesses of native English-speaking teachers (NESTs) and local English teachers (LETs) : perceptions of university students in Thailand
Abstract:
This IS research was conducted to investigate how Thai second-year university students perceive the strengths and weaknesses of Native English-Speaking Teachers (NESTs) and Local English Teachers (LETs) concerning the linguistic, pedagogical and socio-cultural aspects of teaching English to Thai students. Thirty Thai second-year students majoring in English, at a public university in Thailand were selected as members of the sample population. A mixture of both quantitative and qualitative methods was chosen, using two main research instruments: questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire data were analysed by using SPSS, to get percentages, means, and standard deviations. Lastly, three respondents were chosen to be interviewed to supplement the questionnaire findings. The findings indicate that NESTs can be qualified teachers since they are proficient users of English, they are good models for the students in regard to language use, and they encourage students to communicate in English. Additionally, they have a good understanding of world culture. These can be perceived as their strengths. It was also found that LETs are teachers who best understand the local Thai context and students' difficulties, abilities and needs. Although LETs can be qualified teachers who have a strong commitment to teaching, they still have a weak point concerning their English competency and they need to develop their language skills in relation to the linguistic aspects of teaching. In conclusion, to become the ideal sort of English teachers and professionals in English language teaching, good cooperation between native speakers of English and local teachers could be beneficial to improve the teaching skills and techniques of both groups. As NESTs and LETs possess different strengths and weaknesses, it could be helpful for learners to study with both types of teachers who should work together so that they can support and help each other to give the best teaching and learning to their students
