Comparative study using the combination of picosecond laser of 1064 nm plus 532 nm versus 1064 nm wavelengths alone in the treatment of atrophic acne scars
Abstract:
Background: Acne pathophysiology is multifactorial; mainly due to excessive production of sebum, action of androgen hormone, colonization of Propionibacterium acnes within pilosebaceous units and hyperkeratinization of follicles. These factors, subsequently leads to inflammation, rupture of the follicular units and perifollicular abscess formation, which then leads to healing and scarring process. There are 2 major types of scarring resulted by acne pathogenesis: atrophic scars and hypertrophic scars. Atrophic scars contributed about 80% of acne scars which is due to collagen degradation. Severe scarring can contribute to patients physical and emotional distressing.
Objective: To compare the efficacy of combination treatment with picosecond laser of 1064 nm and 532 nm dual wavelengths in mild to moderate atrophic acne scars with 1064 nm single wavelength of picosecond laser alone.
Methods: This research is a comparative, randomized, split face clinical trial with 15 volunteers and the duration of study is 12 weeks. Parameters such as skin texture score by VISIA®, acne scars improvement scores by dermatologists and patients were used for assessment at baseline visit, 4th, 8th and 12th week.
Results: Statistically significant results of better skin texture score were seen on the dual wavelengths side (1064 nm+532 nm) with mean skin texture index on both sides in each visit statistically significant improved at the level of 0.05 (p=0.001 and p=0.022, respectively). No adverse effects were observed.
Conclusion: Both the dual wavelengths and single wavelength (1064 nm) statistically improved the acne scar in skin texture and scar volume, however more improvement was seen on the dual wavelengths side.
