A design guideline for smartphone menu patterns and icon designs for children, adult, and older adult users
Abstract:
Besides general users, children and older adults have gathered momentum as smartphone users. Despite the trend in mobility, true standards for smartphone user interface design nor design guidelines to assist user interface designers did not happen. Moreover, the age-sensitive guidelines were hardly established. Among many user interface components, the menu was a key element for an effective design. Menu patterns and pictorial-based elements were important components of smartphone menus. No evaluation was conducted to study how menu patterns and icon visual design were related to menu item acquisition in the mobile context in relation to the users age. The first objective was to survey research literature on the mobile user interface design patterns. The second objective was to study the influence of age groups, menu patterns, icon background colors, and icon symbols on menu selection time, satisfaction, and selection errors for smartphones. The third objective was to propose a design guideline for menu and icon for smartphones for users of different age groups. For these purposes, a between-subject four-way ANOVA was conducted to determine the influence of age groups, menu patterns, icon background colors, and icon symbols on menu selection time, satisfaction, and selection errors in smartphone context. The results of the experiment clearly showed that all independent variables have influences on menu selection time, satisfaction, and selection errors. For age groups, the adults responded significantly faster and made fewer selection errors than the other two groups. For the other three variables, the results showed that the grid menu pattern, multicolor background, and pictorial symbols contributed to faster menu selection time, higher satisfaction, and fewer selection errors. From the experimental outcomes, a design guideline for the design of menu patterns and icon designs were developed for each age group
