In addition to it can be used as an anti-oxidant, strong sebum normalization agent and moisturizing agent. Moreover, it can reduce the amount of melanin in the process of melanogenesis due to its tyrosinase inhibitory properties. It also acts by exfoliating epidermis, removing the pigment from the stratum corneum.
Objective: To study the efficacy of 5% Shikimic acid serum from star anise seed extract for facial whitening

Skin whitening efficacy measurement was assessed at baseline, 4th, 8th, and 12th week by measuring mean melanin index by Mexameter®MX18 and comparing the photography VISIA® analysis. Satisfactory score and adverse effects of the volunteers were observed and independently evaluated by three dermatologists and will be recorded throughout the study.
Results: The outcome of the mean melanin index score of total face that applied 5% Shikimic acid serum from star anise seed extract in each visit statistically significant decreased. Thus, 5% Shikimic acid serum from star anise seed extract could provide the facial skin whitening effect. This study of 5% Shikimic acid serum from star anise seed extract also achieved high participants satisfactory score and no adverse effect was detected.
