Abstract:
Golden apple snail (GAS) is one of serious pests of rice field which plays a key role
in damaging and reducing the rice production. Saponins are natural glycosides of
triterpenoids or steroids that widely used as pesticides because of its high efficiency,
biodegradability, and biocompatibility. However, they are unstable in water leading to
decrease in the efficiency. This work focused on preparation of chitosan beads for containing
and controlled releasing of Camellia oleifera saponins in order to increase the pesticidal
activity and stability of saponins in the rice field. The saponin-loaded chitosan beads were
characterized by FTIR, UV-Vis and SEM analysis. Low loading of 1% w/w of saponins in
chitosan resulted in higher encapsulation efficiency. The release rate of the beads in various
conditions has been studied. Moreover, the biological effect of saponins on the growth of
Oryza sariva L rice and mortality of Tilapia fish and Pomacea canaliculata snails had been
studied. The LC50 values of saponin on fish and snails were 2.13 and 7.45 ppm at 72 and 96 h,
respectively. Treating optimal saponin concentration showed high growth promotion of rice
plant. These results indicated that friendly environmentally saponin-loaded chitosan beads
have a potential to develop as pesticide against golden apple snail
