Abstract:
A crude hexane extract of the roots of Toddalia asiatica was purified by
chromatographic techniques, affording four known coumarins, coumurrayin (1), toddaculin
(2), toddanol (3), and artanin (4), and four known alkaloids, chelerythrine (5), 8-
methoxydihydrochelerythrine (6), skimmianine (7), and 8-methoxynorchelerythrine (8). It
was found that 6 exhibited cytotoxicity against KB and NCI-H187 cell lines with IC50 values
of 2.40 and 0.748 μg/ml, respectively. Compound 8 showed antimalarial activity against
Plasmodium falciparum with an IC50 value of 5.43 μg/mL.
