Conversion of water lettuce to fermentable sugars by liquid hot water pretreatment
Abstract:
Water lettuce (WL), an invasive floating plant, has been studied as a potential feedstock for biofuel production. Liquid hot water (LHW) pretreatment is one of the potential physicochemical pretreatments because of its high performance, environmentally friendly, less corrosion on equipment and lower inhibitors formation for enzymatic hydrolysis. In this study, LHW pretreatment conditions were optimized to convert WL to fermentable sugars using the response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD). LHW pretreatment was carried out in the temperature range of 152-208°C, 2% (w/v) biomass loading and different pretreatment times (9-51 min). The optimal conditions for the LHW pretreatment were 190.7°C for 51 min (severity factor (log R0) of 4.38). The results indicated that the highest total sugar concentration at log R0 of 4.38 was 17.26 g/L. The coefficient determination (R2) of 84.80% indicated that the model could be applied effectively in the enzymatic hydrolysis of WL. FE-SEM images illustrate that pretreatment changes WL-structure susceptibility to attack by enzymes. Crystalline index (CrI) of pretreated WL showed an increased crystallinity of pretreated WL due to the removal of amorphous structure. In addition, pretreated WL exhibited higher surface area and total pore volume together with lower hemicellulose and lignin than untreated WL.
