Drivers and barriers to carbon footprinting for Thai livestock-based product manufacturers
Abstract:
Nowadays, the carbon footprint of products plays a crucial role in terms of a company's competition in
the global market due to there being a greater awareness of environmental issues, particularly global
warming. However, in Thailand, the assessment of product's carbon footprint (or "carbon footprinting") is
still not generally conducted among Thai manufacturers. This might be due to the fact that they lack any
strong desire or incentive to perform such assessments, or they are faced with a number of barriers
preventing the assessment. This study therefore aims to investigate the factors that motivate and hinder
the implementation of carbon footprint assessment by focusing on the case of Thai livestock-based
product manufacturers. The lists of potential drivers and barriers were gathered from a review of articles
that revealed the drivers and/or barriers towards sustainable/green supply chain management practices.
Various drivers and barriers were then validated and ranked through the process of interviewing seven
experts, including three university lecturers who work closely in the field of carbon footprint assessment,
and four owners or senior managers from livestock product manufacturing companies. In the end, the
main drivers and barriers were presented and discussed. The results of this study can be used as promising
guidelines to assist food manufacturers in Thailand to pursue better assessment of their carbon footprint
and obtain carbon labels to enhance their competitive ability.
