Antioxidant and nitric oxide scavenging activity of Chrysophyllum cainito green fruit extract
Abstract:
Chrysophyllum caimito or star apple is a tropical tree, in the Sapotaceae family, native to Central America and West Indies. The size and shape of the fruits are similar to apples. The fruits are used in folk medicine for inflammation
associated with laryngitis and pneumonia and for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. It holds great potential as an
antimicrobial agent for chemotherapeutic medicine. Flavonoid antioxidants have been identified in the fruits. The ethanol extract and their fractions (CCF1-CCF4) from the green fruits have been analyzed by determining the antioxidant, nitric oxide inhibition, and cytotoxicity properties using in vitro assays. At a concentration in the well of 125 μg/mL, the extract displayed DPPH radical scavenging activity with a percentage of inhibition of 43.37, which was lower than CCF3 and CCF4 (81.85 % and 83.21 %, respectively). At a concentration of 50 μg/mL, fraction CCF3 also
exhibited nitric oxide scavenging activity less than CCF4 with a percentage of inhibition of 48.62 % and 65.45%, respectively. They were not toxic to human keratinocyte cells. The polar fractions are suitable for use in the food and
cosmetic industry
