Designing and developing a self-study English for specific purposes curriculum for personnel of transportation business
Abstract:
The objectives of this study are 1) to develop a Self-Study English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curriculum to enhance communicative English ability of the personnel of transportation business in the northern provinces, Thailand, 2) to investigate communicative English ability of the transportation business s personnel in the northern provinces, Thailand, before and after the implementation of the Self- Study English for Specific Purposes ( ESP) curriculum, and 3) to explore the opinions of the transportation businesss personnel towards the Self-Study English for Specific Purposes ( ESP) curriculum. The subject of the study was personnel of the transportation business in the northern provinces of Thailand. The sample group was 90 participants ( 30 ticket sellers, 30 customer relation officers, and 30 bus hostesses) who were purposively selected to receive the treatment, the Self- Study ESP curriculum.
The research instruments in this study were 1) Self- Study English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curriculums consisting of a Self-Study English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curriculum for ticket sellers, a Self-Study English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curriculum for customer relation officers, a Self- Study English for Specific Purposes ( ESP) curriculum for bus hostesses, 2) a Needs Survey questionnaire 3) a Needs focus group interview 4) Environmental Analysis observations, and 5) Preliminary Functional tests, 6) Functional Communicative English performance tests given as pretest and posttest, and 7) Follow- up interviews and reflections
The quantitative data collected from those instruments were analyzed by means of frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test while the qualitative data involved thematic analysis and content analysis.
The results show that a Self- Study English for Specific Purposes ( ESP) curriculum is effective in enhancing communicative English ability of personnel of transportation business in the northern provinces, Thailand because the transportation business s communicative English ability significantly increased after the implementation of the Self- Study ESP curriculum. Regarding the opinions of the transportation business s personnel towards the Self- Study English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curriculum, they agreed that the curriculum helped them improve their communicative English ability. They had positive opinions towards the curriculum s objectives, language inputs, learning materials, assessment.
