Abstract:
This study of a communication for cultural transmission of Lanna Tattoos is a qualitative research which is collecting data from researches papers, observations and interviews. This research is aimed 1) to study a communication for cultural transmission of Lanna Tattoos and 2) to study the elements of cultural selection to inherit the Lanna cultures. The Researcher has presented research results based on research objectives. According to this research, it is found that a communication for cultural transmission of Lanna Tattoos has been changed the communication processes to inherit the Lanna cultures and also maintain the Lanna tattoos as the followings ; 1. Preservation: it is to remain a communication patterns from monks to cultural successors in the form of a personal communication. For instance, in the past there were teaching through the oral tradition teaching, note-taking and the monks explanations. Additionally, there were remained in the ritual patterns that the tattoo successors need to pledge to the teachers, tattoo masters (monk) through giving respects to the teacher rituals which is a symbol of spirits. 2. Modification: as in this study, it has modified the pattern of tattoos to make it related to main social values but still keep the ritual processes. It is brought Lanna tattoos becoming well-known not only in this area but also among our neighboring cultures such as China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Japan where have similar religious beliefs. 3. Reconstruction: a cultural transmission of cultural successors has a form of a communication through special events by creating new communication spaces from the past which never have before. However, communication through these special events will create a meeting place and exchange with those who are interested in Lanna tattoos and also give peoples the opportunity to access to live culture resources which is reinforced the existence and understanding of the tattoos. At the same time, there are also new patterns that have been applied to the old style to match the needs of those who came to get Lanna tattoos or Lanna cultures. 4.Excision: this study did not find any excision of the patterns or rituals but it was modified to conform to the modern era. In the past, if you would like to get a tattoo, you need to pick an auspicious date and time. Currently, there are some changes among the groups of Lanna tattoos successors because it has been changed to be more in a commercial form. Therefore, increasing the demand of Lanna tattoos have been adjusted by the inheritance requirements but still retain the values and beliefs of the tattoos as before.
