Arin Changsawang. Gnomon in Dubliners. Master's Degree(English Language and Literature). Thammasat University. Thammasat University Library. : Thammasat University, 2019.
Abstract:
Adopting the definitions of the term gnomon given by Euclid and Giordano Bruno, the study aims to examine the concept of lack in a collection of James Joyces short stories entitled Dubliners. Depending on how it is looked, gnomon implies lack and completion, absence and presence, multiplicity and singularity. With its ambivalent meaning, gnomon functions as a model and a technique to shed light on selected characters in this collection. As absence of context, gnomon in The Sisters exposes interpretative impasse. In Counterparts, gnomon as regressive multiplicity leads to mimesis of violence. Gnomon is also deployed as textual omission and excess in Clay and as a double bind in Eveline to depict the pathos and moral dilemmas of the main characters while in The Painful Case, the gnomon as lack of completion and completion of lack enacts self-generation and self erasure of subjectivity
