A business model guideline to decrease disparity of music artists in Thailand
Abstract:
The disparity in the Thai music artist industry is becoming increasingly obvious in our digital age. Signed artists working under music labels are financially supported by big entertainment companies. While many individual artists, unsigned artists, or independent artists who are not under a contract with a record label, are facing difficulty finding supporters. In addition, they also lack music production funding from a company. Because of the limited resources and budgets to cover distribution, productions, merchandise, and other expense, many individual artists cannot find the essential resources and budgets. Even though the evolution of music production software and recording technology enable many individual artists in Thailand to produce their music at home, many are still aiming to be signed by a big recording label, due to financial support and connection, which can improve their production quality and the distribution of their album. This thesis aims to explore the current context of the music industry, investigate listener path to support their favorite artist, and to design a business model that encourages equity in musical artist industry through an online platform. According to Cochran formula, data set were collected from 400 participants through a close-ended questionnaire to investigate listener path and reveal their expectation of individual artists. In-depth interviews were conducted with 8 individual artists, who were separated into 4 artist types: The pure DIY (do-it-yourself) ; the unsigned artist with a team ; the individual artist who has a companys offer but decided to turn them down ; and the post-label artist. This study intends to discover individual artists pain-points to create a business model that give opportunities for individual artists to improve their music toward customer needs. From the interview, the result shows the potential approaches to designing a combination of a crowdfunding systems and music streaming platform that match the needs of music customers and what individual artist can offer. Hopefully the final outcomes would be an essential driver to Thai music artist and investor related to the music industry
