Listening and speaking strategy awareness of Thai high school students studying in English program and Thai program
Abstract:
Language learning strategies have been proven to be key factors that enhance learners abilities in all of the four English skills. This is supported by a number of research studies that emphasize differences in use of strategies between high and low achievement students, or investigated the level of achievement after implementing strategy instruction in the classroom. However, a limited number of studies have been carried out to explore the use of strategies in learners who study English in the same curriculum but on different programs. Therefore, this study investigated the use of listening and speaking strategies in 60 Thai high school students studying English in a regular Thai program and an English program using the adapted questionnaire from Metacognitive Awareness Inventory in Listening and Speaking Strategies (MAILLS) (Zhang and Goh, 2006), Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ) (Vandergrift, Goh, Mareschal & Tafaghodtari, 2006) and Oral Communication Strategy Inventory (OSCI) (Nakatani, 2006). The results indicate that students are generally aware of the usefulness of language learning strategies ; however, they reported that they did not always use those strategies despite the awareness of their usefulness. The discrepancy in strategy use also shows that Thai program students reported using some of the listening and speaking strategies significantly less than English program students. These results suggested that Thai students with more exposure to English utilized more strategies, especially the social affective ones. Hence, the opportunity to communicate in a controlled setting is important for the language learners
