A survey of reading strategies taught by Thai secondary school EFL teachers in Bangkok, Thailand
Abstract:
A Survey of Reading Strategies Taught among Thai Secondary School EFL Teachers in Bangkok, Thailand was conducted in order to: 1) investigate whether Thai EFL teachers in secondary schools teach reading strategies to their students and 2) investigate the points of view of Thai EFL teachers in Thai secondary schools towards teaching reading strategies. The participants were 49 Thai EFL teachers teaching at secondary schools in Bangkok, Thailand. The research instrument was a questionnaire which contained: 1) participants general information 2) an adapted version of the Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) developed by Mokhtari and Sheorey (2002), and 3) open-ended questions. The collect data were analyzed into percentages, means, standard deviations and frequencies. The main result of this study is that the teachers reported teaching reading strategies at the high level. All three reading strategy categories, the global reading strategy category, problem-solving reading strategy category, and support reading strategy category registered at the high level. The global reading strategy category was reported as the most frequent reading strategy category taught, followed by the problem-solving reading strategy category, and the support reading strategy category, respectively. The teachers also reported the importance of teaching reading strategies to their students. They further stated that their students also noticed the significance of reading strategy use
