Abstract:
The activities and toxicity of crude extracts from selected Thai herb have been investigated in this study. Selected seven Thai herbs were Allium sativum, Momordica charantia, Moringa oleifera, Phyllanthus emblica, Piper nigrum, Camellia sinensis and Thunbergia laurifolia. Each herb was extracted using maceration method with methanol, ethanol or distilled water. The methanol extract of C. sinensis had the highest total phenolic content with 447.47±3.39 mg GAE/g crude extract. Whereas, the methanol extract of T. laurifolia had the highest total flavonoid content with 411.35±7.85 mg QUE/g crude extract. While, the ethanol extract of P. emblica had the highest antioxidant activity, IC50 value was 2.45 µg/ml. Additionally, the ethanol extract of T. laurifolia had the highest antimicrobial activity against B. subtilis, E. coli, E. aerogenes and S. aureus. The highest antioxidant activities of each extractions were selected for toxicity study in zebrafish embryos. The 50% lethal concentration (LC50) of A. sativum, P. emblica, M. charantia, P. nigrum and T.laurifolia were 10.50±0.05, 69.30±2.83, 350.94±69.64, 14.10±1.54 and 300.47±14.87, respectively. While, M. oleifera and C. sinensis did not cause mortality of zebrafish embryos. These results will be further use for pharmaceutical applications
