Inventory analysis of packaging items in a food repackaging company
Abstract:
This research aims to understand the nature of business and apply a suitable inventory policy to a case study foodrepackaging company. Faced with seasonal export demands and perishable items, the company adopted two different inventory policies for related components. Because of its perishable and seasonal demand, a lot-of-lot inventory policy is appliedto raw materials. However,bulk-purchasing was applied to packaging inventory to realize the economy of scales. These different inventory policies led to the deadstock and obsolete of packaging inventories as the company lacks ofpurchasing standards and constant monitoring. Further ABC analysis of the company shows that Bag and Packaging inventories have a long lead time due to the fact that they are sourced internationally. Therefore, this research proposed local sourcing and vendor volume negotiating to reduce ordering lead timeand reorder point (ROP). The results suggested this could lead to reduce of holding cost and prevent stock out and, thus, improve the inventory management system
