Abstract:
The publication of university academic journals is a medium for disseminating research knowledge and an indicator of the university academic performance. Efficient database system will support and enhance the work of staffs who particularly responsible for IT system. At present, it is found that the data of the article author, the reviewers, and the section editors are stored in Excel files on the personal computers of the staffs responsible for data storage. Consequently, it is being difficult to assess and trace the process of the received articles. Therefore, the researcher is interested in developing a database management system for academic journals for more effective information management. The objectives of this research were to: 1) Study the guidelines for developing a management system for academic journals, 2) develop a management system for academic journals, and 3) construct a prototype for implementing the system to manage academic journals. The research procedure consisted of studying the previous work system, collecting data, analyzing data, designing a database system, and developing a database system to assist in handling academic journals. The system consists of 4 main tasks as follows: 1) the storage and retrieval system of the article authors, 2) the storage and retrieval system of the article reviewers, 3) notification system for the article reviewers to submit the assessment, and 4) data reporting system and statistical data processing. After the complete development, the system was validated by 10 editors or staffs responsible for academic journals of King Mongkut's University of Technology North Bangkok, i.e. 1) Applied Science and Engineering Progress, 2) The Journal of Industrial Technology, 3) Technical Education Journal KMUTNB, 4) The Journal of Applied Science, 5) Journal of Technical Education Development, 6) The Journal of Faculty of Applied Arts, 7) Journal of Vocational and Technical Education, 8) Journal of Business and Industrial Development, 9) Information Technology Journal, and 10) The Journal of King Mongkut's University of Technology North Bangkok. The results showed that the average overall satisfaction score was at the highest level at 4.76 indicating that the developed system was satisfied by the users and can be used to manage academic journals effectively.
