Study of problem solving ability and learning achievement on addition and subtraction using polya's problem solving process with bar model technique for fourth grade students
Abstract:
This research aimed 1) to compare problem solving ability on addition and subtraction for grade 4 students after they received learning activities using Polya's conceptual problem solving process with bar model technique with a 60% criterion and 2) to compare the learning achievement of grade 4 students on addition and subtraction after they received learning activities using Polya's conceptual problem solving process with bar modeling technique with a 60% criterion. The sample units consisted of 29 primary school students in grade 4/2 which were sampled by cluster random sampling with drawing lots. Research tools included learning lesson plans, activity sheets, problem solving test, and learning achievement test. The data were analyzed by mean, median and sign test. The results showed that1) after learning the activity, the grade 4 students had 38.00 points of median score of problem solving ability on addition and subtraction, which was statistically significant higher than the 60% criterion (30 points) at the level of 0.05,and 2) after receiving the activity, the grade 4 students had 14 points of median score of learning achievement on addition and subtraction, which was statistically significant higher than the 60% criterion (12 points) at the level of 0.05.
