The Relationship Between Biomarkers and Macular Pigment Optical Densityin Hypertensive Patients
Abstract:
The relationship between inflammation and Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD) in hypertensive patients is evaluated using biomarkers including hsCRP, lipid level and ratio, waist circumference, and BMI in hypertensive patients.
Method: In this cross-sectional design, 62 patients were recruited from January 6 to 8 in 2022 at a primary care unit. The MPOD was measured using the Macular pigment screener II. Blood tests for hsCRP, lipid profile, waist circumference measurement, BMI calculation, and completing a questionnaire that could be linked to MPOD. Statistical analysis was done with Microsoft Excel 2019 and Stata version 16.1. Descriptive data analysis reports mean ± SD. The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) was used to analyze the MPOD-biomarker association.
Result: In hypertension patients aged under 50 years, there were positive significant relationships between hsCRP<1 and MPOD (r = 0.65, P = 0.02), between High Density Lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and MPOD (r = 0.62, = 0.02). There were negative significant correlations between BMI and MPOD (r = -0.69, P = 0.01) and between waist circumference and MPOD (r = -0.58, P = 0.04). In male hypertension., there was a positive significant correlation between HDL-C and MPOD (r = 0.41, P = 0.03) and negative significant correlations between total cholesterol to HDL-C (r = -0.40, P = 0.04), triglyceride to HDL-C (r = -0.44, P = 0.02) with MPOD. In all hypertensive patients the ratio of triglyceride to HDL-C was negatively correlated with MPOD (r = -0.26, P = 0.04).
Conclusion: Inflammation was linked to MPOD. Anti-inflammatory medication or supplements, diet, weight loss and exercise may be beneficial in preventing MPOD degradation.
