Abstract:
This research on A survey study of awareness towards English pronunciation among Thai flight attendants in Thai Airways International Company has been conducted to investigate the awareness towards English pronunciation among Thai nationality flight attendants who work in Thai Airways International Company. The purpose of this study was to explore the respondents awareness level, to investigate the awareness towards their English pronunciation, and to discover the most difficult areas of English pronunciation among THAI flight attendants. The respondents of this study consisted of 93 Thai nationality flight attendants at Thai Airways International Company. The data was collected by using an English language questionnaire and was analyzed by using percentages. The results of the survey revealed that most of the respondents give the middle ranking on their English pronunciation ability while some of them think that they have good English pronunciation. However, the findings show that the awareness level of the importance of having good English pronunciation was at the high level. Moreover they have been trying to improve their pronunciation. In addition, they are aware that good pronunciation can make them confident in communication with foreigners and makes them look professional. The result of the study revealed that flight attendants have a high level of awareness towards the advantage of learning pronunciation. They are aware that studying pronunciation is useful for learning English, as well as necessary for listening and speaking skills. Moreover they suggested that pronunciation should be taught in every communicative course. Besides, the respondents believed that bad pronunciation can cause difficulty more than wrong grasp of grammar, and can lead to communication break-down. Most of the flight attendants agreed that word stress is the most difficult area of English pronunciation, followed by consonant sounds. In addition, they suggested that accent and linking words are other areas of English pronunciation problems they encounter
