Abstract:
This research aimed to study effect of milling time on size and particle distribution in production of A356/SiC powder composite via mechanical milling method. The reinforced phase was 8 micron SiC with 15 wt percent. The A356 powder was sieved from chips produced via vertical milling machine. A356 powder were divided into three different sizing. The average sizes included 545.93, 384.29 and 318.06 micron. The mechanical milling experiments were conducted for 50 and 60 hr. The result showed that increased milling time decreased in size of composite powder. In addition, finer initial A356 powder improve a distribution of silicon carbide in the A356
matrix. Furthermore, at 50 milling time, 318.06 micron of A356 powder produced A356/SiC composite powder with average size of 169.44 micron with a good distribution of SiC.
