Evaluation and comparison of antioxidants
In tiliacra triandra and moringa oleifera leaf extracts by dpph
Abstract:
In Thailand, a variety of plants have been consumed as food and numerous Thai herbs have been reported as sources of natural antioxidants. Two of the most extensively used Thai herbs in skin care and medicinal products for their antioxidant purposes are Tiliacora triandra (Yanang) and Moringa oleifera (horseradish). Previous studies found that both yanang and horseradish exhibited an antioxidant capacity. However, comparison of the antioxidant capacity between these two plants have never been investigated. Eight samples of each leaf extract were analyzed using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazl) assay. The major findings from this study demonstrated that yanang has an average of 46.57% inhibition, and horseradish has an average of 50.03% inhibition, indicating that horseradish has significantly higher antioxidant capacity (p<0.05). This finding provided the important information regarding the antioxidant capacity of these extracts which could be beneficial for the future research and development of additional products with antioxidant properties.
