Abstract:
COVID-19 transmitted through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person cough and sneezes. WHO and other organizations suggested that wearing facemask can limit the spreading of the respiratory infection. While facemask is widely used to protect ones health against the pollution and the respiratory transmission disease, the question has been raised whether wearing facemasks in daily life could have an effect or even cause damages to our health or not.
In this study, the objectives were to compare the effect between duration of wearing facemask and to compare the effect between different type of facemasks on the oxygen saturation of hemoglobin and physiologic changes including heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure in healthy office workers age between 20-40.
Methodology, 30 healthy office workers received 4 types of facemasks including N95 respirator, Surgical mask, Sanitized fabric mask with specially woven to protect PM2.5 particles with water repellent property and Sanitized fabric mask double layer with water repellant and anti-bacterial property and wear one type per day for 240 minutes in accordance with the order arranged by the researcher. The Oxygen saturation, Respiratory rate, Heart rate, and Blood pressure were measured and recorded at 0, 120, 180, and 240 minutes. The collected data was statistical evaluated to compare the mean of physiologic parameters mentioned above between the different duration and compare the mean of physiologic parameters between the different type of masks and the results then were summarized.
Results, the 30 participants were all female and were able to complete the study without the drop out. Mean age was 32.4 (32.4+3.98), mean BMI was 23.81 (23.81+3.99). The participants were all passed the qualitative fit test for N95 prior to participating in the study. When comparing between different duration the mean oxygen saturation were found to be significantly decreased after wearing fabric masks with anti-bacterial property for 60 and 180 minute (p<0.05) and there were no significant differences of mean oxygen saturation among different type of facemasks (p>0.05). The comparison between different duration showed that mean respiratory rate was significantly increased after wearing surgical mask for 240 minutes and N95 for 120, 180 and 240 minutes (p<0.05). The mean respiratory rate at 120 minutes were significantly different when compared the N95 to the fabric mask with anti-bacterial property(p<0.05), and at 180 minutes there were significant differences of mean respiratory rate when compared the N95 to surgical mask and fabric mask with anti-bacterial property(p<0.05). There were no significant differences for mean Blood pressure and mean heart rate when compared between the duration of wear facemask and when compared between different type of facemasks (p>0.05).
In the conclusion, although there were statistically significant decreased in oxygen saturation after wearing the fabric mask with anti-bacterial property, but the changes were less than 1% and were not found to cause the hypoxemia among the participants as well as the significantly increased in mean respiratory rate after wearing surgical mask and N95, the increased range were less than 1 breath per minute and would not consider to have a negative clinical impact on the healthy users. According to the results, wearing these 4 types of facemasks for 240 minutes would not cause the clinical impact on the healthy office workers aging between 20-40 years old.
