Abstract:
Background: Aging is a must ongoing process of life. Everyone or every particle must go through aging process as the time passed. Skin aging is characterized by appearance of wrinkles, laxity and pigmentary irregularities. It is a multi system degenerative process that involves the skin and its support system. Nowadays, technologies are advanced and people try to research about How to control the aging process?. Facial rejuvenation is one of the popular cosmetic procedures these days and it is used to maintain the healthy youthful look of the person. As for the daily basic skin care, topical usage of rejuvenating serum or cream is recommended. Topical usage of rejuvenating serum has pros such as low cost, little or no side effects and can be used as a daily skin care routine. Spirulina extracts are known for their strong antioxidant activities with phycocyanin, β-carotene, vitamin B12, vitamin B9, vitamin E, vitamin F, iron and other carotenoids. Spirulina extracts can prevent skin aging from extrinsic factors by means of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-photo-aging, and even melanogenesis inhibition.
Objectives: The research was aimed to study the effectiveness of Spirulina serum in decreasing the facial wrinkle and improving skin in moisturization and elasticity, compared with standard base serum.
Materials and methods: The study was conducted as a double-blind, randomized, controlled and split face clinical trial on 16 volunteers: 9 males and 7 females. The written informed consents were obtained from the volunteers. All the volunteers were selected according to exclusion and inclusion criteria and asked to apply according to instructions. The data were measured and recorded at 0th, 4th, 8th and 12th week respectively. As for the skin parameters, Cutometer MPA 580, corneometer, tewameter and VISIA scan were used as measurement tools.
Results: After the study, the results showed that 5 % Spirulina serum had more improvement in reducing facial wrinkles and increasing the skin elasticity and moisturization when compared to the base serum, with p-value<0.001 in all forehead, eye and nasolabial fold areas especially starting from 8th week of application. No serious adverse effects were occurred. The serum was easily absorbed into the skin, easy to apply and had no side effects. As the results, the serum can reduce overall wrinkles of mild and moderate wrinkles. But, for deep wrinkles, it may need additional treatments adjunct to the serum.
Conclusion: the daily topical application of 5% Spirulina serum is safe and effective for wrinkle and moisturization.
