Abstract:
The study of English language needs of engineers at PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited was carried out to identify whether there were similarities and differences in English language needs of engineers who were from different engineering backgrounds. In addition, the study aimed to explore the communicative situations in which English is essential and this particular area of English language needs for further development of English for Specific Purpose courses that meet the engineers needs. Needs analysis was conducted at the Modification and Construction Department, PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited. The respondents of this study were 80 engineers who were from four engineering fields: process engineers, electrical and instrument engineers, mechanical engineers, and project engineers. At the beginning stage of needs analysis, the differences of English language needs among the groups of engineers were expected. Surprisingly, the major findings pointed out the similarities of English language needs of engineers from the four engineering fields. Most of respondents perceived that they were good in reading engineering documents while their abilities in writing legal documents and speaking with governmental parties were perceived as fair. Furthermore, the findings also revealed that most of respondents had very similar perception of the essentialness of English language. They perceived that English was highly essential for reading engineering documents and writing engineering documents. Moreover, the findings established the types of English for Specific Purpose courses in written engineering English and written business English which were highly needed for all groups of engineers, as well as that reading engineering English and reading business English were essential and needed to be improved. In other words, the English for Specific Purpose courses should be designed or prepared in relation to engineering and business situations
