Abstract:
This research study is conducted by a qualitative method. It aims to understand
the identities of adolescents through Thai dialect usage in hip hop music and to study
the hip hop music video with Thai dialect to manifest the identities of Thai adolescents.
The analysis was done through six hip hop music videos with Thai dialect was used.
They had been distinguished as follows: two songs with Northern Thai dialect; two songs
with Northeast Thai dialect; and two songs with Southern Thai dialect. Thai dialect had
been analyzed by a number of theory-based criteria focusing on identity, adolescent
psychology, and semiology. The results showed that two major perspectives toward
individual life decoding from the music videos were high ambition with great enthusiasm
and daring to be different and unique. Considering perspectives toward romantic life,
there were an attempt to succeed in a romantic relationship and the thought of moving
on after the end of love life. For perspectives toward society, the study also showed that
two perspectives were being proud of own originality and expressing homesickness
when leaving hometown. The analysis also implies that music videos have empowered
the communication of original messages. Motion helps to clarify and fulfill the lyrics to
completely communicate identities components. It also increases effectiveness in
conveying feelings, thoughts, opinions, and local cultures
