An Analysis of illusionary concepts of Utopia in The Beach by Alex Garland
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to analyze illusionary concepts of Utopia in Alex Garland's novel entitled 'The Beach.' The framework for the analysis comprises three parts, including human morality, social improvement, and political improvement. Based on the analysis, it is revealed that all of the characters have an illusionary concept of Utopia. In relation to human morality, a certain group of travelers manifest their illusionary concepts of Utopia through their various forms of escapes, discontentment; lack of knowledge, violence, and negative emotions and behaviors. Meanwhile, social improvement includes Utopia undermined as a secret place awashed in drug abuse. Political improvement is also shown in power control, subculture and lack of unity. The analysis also indicates that the characters all suffer in every way from living in the make-belief Utopia community no matter who they are; some of them die, and some of them face uncertain futures. The study implies that Garland, who is a contemporary novelist, believes that some groups of travelers have a misconception about Utopia. Finally, a significant finding of this study is that the novel under investigation contains a few other controversial themes as well.
