Internal logistics system design : a case study of wood furniture supplier
Abstract:
Well-designed Internal logistics system can increase customer satisfaction. The case study company has five warehouses located at the same area (within the company area) and each warehouse store different products. When orders received by salespersons, they need to check the stock of products before orders are sent to cashiers for printing out receipts for customers to perform payment. Then, customers need to visit each warehouse place by place depended on their product lists. With this procedure, customers are not convenient and spend long time both traveling time and waiting time. The proposed solutions are to apply the concept of warehouse management, plant layout design, ECRS, information technology (IT), and barcode to improve activities among company' s warehouses. Three solution were proposed as 1) designing only one area for customers to wait the products, 2) introducing IT system to directly sent product lists to each warehouse, and 3) applying Barcode system to indicate the location of each product together with visual control to allow operators to pick product easily. The further work is to real implementation and evaluate the performance after improvements. The improvement can be assessed for the total amount of time the customer spends on each order, and the time should be reduced. In addition, the working time of the operators in each warehouse should be reduced as well.
