Abstract:
Areas along Khlong Bangkok Noi has long been with historical background. In the past, this area has been located along the Chao Phraya river until the tide was short cut by man-made cannel. Community characteristic was predominantly a cannei-along sid planters, which rely on natural water resources, in many cases, such as, settlement, agriculture, consumption, communication and transportation, and water activities in their lifestyles. This has happened continuously, from the past until the presents. Development and growth of the city creased the impact on changing patterns and the role of community along the cannel, by being processed from the city expansion. This process has deteriorated and eventually the disappearance of along-the-cannel life style. The objective of this thesis is to study the development and the historical change of the cannel community in terms of physical, economic and social lifestyle. This could reveal the cause and social impact on the change of communitys lifestyle, in different periods of time, distances, and influence from the city expansion. These can be used as a guideline for the development of community lifestyles, by preserving and continuing cannel community and environment From the study, it was found that the consequence of the changes happened on 3 different levels ; the inner city, the zone of transition, and the urban fringe. Fast changes happen with the first two areas, regarding to housing estate, occupation and income, environment and social life, day by life changing from cannel to land-community. These changes deteriorate the relation of human and water resources, which ended up with the culture changed from cannel to urban community Nevertheless, some are unchanged. This reflects potential and attitude of people living along the Khlong Bangkok Noi, which affects the cannel and river. From the analytical result reveals that the relation of human and water resources, such as lives along the waterway, waterway network, plantation areas and cannel lifestyles are factors which can maintain and continue their cannel community. Furthermore, the changes are due to two factors, internal (occupation and modern culture) and external (communication routes, governments policy and planning and the increase of population). These factors dictate the change of communitys lifestyles, in relations with growth and development, period, connections and speed of communication within the community and also with external. However, the constancy, the change and development cannot be stopped. But the change or development should be closely in line with communitys social and culture. This could happen with government support in collaboration with community co-operation, to optimize a proper environment for the community, of being constantly a cannel lifestyles at present and in the future. This includes area development, human motivation and support, rules and regulation, and policy and planning for development of the community.
