Abstract:
This research aimed 1) to study competency of music teachers at secondary schools, Buriram Province; and 2) to examine need for self-development of music teachers at secondary schools, Buriram Province. The sample was 66 music teachers at secondary schools, Buriram Province selected by purposive sampling. The data were collected by using a 5-point rating scale questionnaire and the data were analyzed by percentage, mean, standard deviation, and simple correlation coefficient.
The results of this study wereas follows:
1. The competency of music teachers at secondary school, Buriram Province was at
a high level in overall aspect. The competency can be divided into 2 parts as follows :
1.1 Music competency was at a high level ( = 3.72) in which aural skills and analysis aspect was at a high level ( = 3.90), and composition and improvisation was at a moderate level ( = 3.46).
1.2Teaching competency was at a high level ( = 3.96) in which class management aspect was at a high level ( = 4.02) and assessment aspect was also at a high level ( = 3.87).
2. The need for self - development of music teachers at secondary school, Buriram Province was at a high level in overall aspect ( = 4.29) which can be divided into 2 parts :
2.1The need for self - development in terms of music was at a high level ( = 4.30) in which composition and improvisation aspect was at a high level ( = 4.36) and aural skills and analysis was also at a high level ( = 4.25).
2.2 The need for self - development in terms of teaching was at a high level ( = 4.28) in which musical assessment was at a high level ( = 4.34) and musical curriculum was also at a high level ( = 4.22).
