Abstract:
In this study, bark samples from Oroxylum indicum were extracted and used as natural dyeing
agents for cotton fabrics. Total phenolic content (TPC) of Oroxylum indicum extracts was assessed based
on the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Color parameter and UV protection of cotton fabrics dyed with different
mordants were investigated. The results showed that TPC of the Oroxylum indicum extracts were 28 mg
GAE/g dry sample. The brown color cotton was obtained from the Oroxylum indicum dyeing. Excellent UV
protection of grayish brown fabric was obtained when FeSO4 was used as a mordant. Mordants i.e. CuSO4,
NaCl, (Al2(SO4)3), limewater provided good UV protection cotton fabrics. UV protection of cotton fabric with
different mordants i.e. FeSO4, ash, CuSO4, NaCl, (Al2(SO4)3), limewater, mud, tamarind juice compared with
water were 98.84, 93.25, 95.37, 95.57, 93.57, 94.40, 90.15, 92.47, 92.86 and 93.05 % respectively.
