Abstract:
Polylactic acid (PLA) has gained much attention in various applications. The increase in consumption volume of this bio-based materials leads to large amount of waste. However, mechanical recycling of this material is not appropriate as large deterioration in the physical and mechanical properties is observed. Therefore, chemical recycling plays a vital role in converting this waste to other valuable products. This work is aimed to develop a chemical recycling process for PLA by employing glycolysis reaction under microwave irradiation. Fe3O4 nanoparticles (MNP) are used as a catalyst, as this materials show good catalytic activities in various system. 1H-NMR, ATR-FTIR, HPLC, and ICP-OES are then applied to examine possible catalytic mechanisms and chemical structures of the glycolysed products. Morphology and crystal structures of MNP before and after reactions are characterized using SEM and XRD. Moreover, Optimized molecular weight of commercial PLA which lead to prepare advanced materials would also be studied and discussed via the effect of glycolysis conditions
