The use of metaphor in print advertisement headlines on cosmetic category appearing in women's and men's fashion magazines
Abstract:
The purposes of this study are to examine the use of each type of
Metaphors-namely structure, orientation and ontology in print advertisement
headlines on cosmetic category appearing in women‟s and men‟s fashion magazines,
and to determine the common themes emerged among cosmetic category
advertisement headlines. After analyzing, the results revealed that from
45 advertisement headlines in women‟s magazines, there were 41 advertisements that
contained metaphor language; while, another 4 advertisements do not use any types of
metaphor. Ontological metaphor is a type of metaphor that is the most frequently
appeared in women‟s magazines. On the other hand, there are a few metaphors found
in cosmetic category advertisement headlines for men. There were only 6 headlines
out of 23 stimuli that the metaphor languages are used, which the result is in the same
way as women, a type of metaphor that most frequently used in men‟s magazine is
ontology. In addition, another purpose of this study is to determine the emerging
themes among cosmetics advertisement headlines. The results presented that there
were 7 themes emerging among advertisement headlines appearing in women‟s
magazines as such: the theme of self-esteem, the theme of self-care, the theme of
indulgence, the theme of optimism, the theme of becoming part of the self, the
theme of reality and the theme of creativity. In contrast, there were only 3 emerging
themes among cosmetic advertisement headlines for men as such: the theme of selfesteem, the theme of self-care and the theme of indulgence. For women‟s magazine,
the common theme that has emerged the most is the theme of self-esteem; whereas,
the common themes that have emerged the most in men‟s magazine are the theme of
self-care and theme of indulgence.
