Thai labor skills knowledge and HRD roles for the automotive industry to comply with industrial revolution 4.0
Abstract:
This research is aimed at identifying the necessary skills and knowledge for
labor to work in the Automotive Industry, examining the roles of HRD regarding the
skills and knowledge development and proposing an HRD practice model for the Fourth
Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0). The researcher used qualitative research as the
research design. The research paradigm is social constructivism using a grounded theory
methods approach as the research strategy to study Thai labor skills knowledge and the
HRD roles for the Automotive Industry to comply with Industrial Revolution 4.0.
The data collection methods in this study was in-depth interview, audio visual and
document review. The researcher collected data information from the stakeholders, 22
participants, who work in an automotive and automotive parts organization which were
divided into 4 groups of participants as top management, human resource development
member, line manager and employee. The experience required was a minimum of 1 year
of experience and an understanding of Industry 4.0 organization in order to gather enough
information from the interviews. Data were coded manually in the process of data
analysis. This study found 10 themes of Labor skills and Knowledge for the Automotive
Industry in Thailand to cope with Industrial Revolution 4.0, which are: 1) Basic skills,
2) Development skills, 3) Hard skills, 4) Individual skills, 5) Soft skills, 6) Special skills,
7) Specific skills, 8) The Fourth Industrial Revolution Skills, 9) Basic Requirements,
and 10) Knowledge. The study found that the roles of HRD regarding the skills and
knowledge development for the Fourth Industrial Revolution are: 1) Advisor,
2) Designer, 3) Design Activities in the Automotive Industry, 4) Developer,
5) Facilitator, 6) Instructor, 7) Leader, 8) Planner, 9) Support HRM activities,
and 10) Organization Supporter. In conclusion, the research reported in this dissertation
makes a significant contribution to people in the selected private companies.
