Abstract:
This thesis aimed to explore the concept of othering under a post-colonial theory. This concept can be vastly applied in many fields, including literature. Kazuo Ishiguros novel Never Let Me Go was used as a case study to present how the othering and the related notions are manifested. The findings unveiled the way the concept of othering was captured in the three stages of the story, linked to a colonial domination and a power structure, as well as demonstrated the manifestation of the othering practices in the forms of linguistic features, indoctrination, objectification, and assimilation. A comparison between the fictional world and the reality were made to visualize the similarities of the characters and the real colonial subjects. Ultimately, this research aimed to ponder readers perceptions about what does it mean to be human?
