Abstract:
Artificial lightings are the key components of indoor farming and importance for the growth of plants. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) represent a promising technology for the indoor farming industry that has technical advantages over traditional lighting sources, but are few information about LED lighting design for indoor farming applications. This paper proposed a technique for LED lighting design based on power per area or W/m 2 . With this technique, the total power of LED lightings can be directly calculated from the farm area. For a PPFD requirement, the w/m 2 is constant independent of the high of luminaire. Based on PPFD at 277.8 µmol/m 2 /s or 1 µmol/m 2 /h or 15,400 Lux, the power per area of conventional LED is equal 255 W/m 2 . The experimental results showed that the design with W/m 2 technique is faster and simpler than the point-by-point lighting design technique with the same uniform PPFD.
