Comparison of mathematics learning achievement and retention of mathayom suksa two students-between the group taking weekly formative test and the group taking unit test
Abstract:
Purposes The purposes of this research were to compare mathematics learning achievement and the retention of mathayom suksa two students between the group taking weekly formative test and the group taking unit test. Procedures The sample were two groups of mathayom suksa two students of Wimuthayarampithayakorn School. The group learned by taking weekly formative test was the experimental group and the group learned by taking unit formative test was the controlled group. Each group consisted of 34 students. The mathematics learning achievement (M 203) of both groups was tested by using F-test and t-test. It revealed that the mathematics learning background of both groups was not different at the 0.05 level of significance. The research instruments constructed by the researcher were as follows : the lesson plans on Equation and Inequality, Ratio and Percent, Volume and Surface Area and Presentation of Data ; ten weekly formative tests constructed according to leaning objectives with the reliabilities of 0.87, 0.91, 0.87, 0.86, 0.83, 0.64, 0.69, 0.60, 0.73, 0.61 respectively; four unit formative tests constructed according to learning objectives with the reliabilities of 0.94, 0.61, 0.81, 0.85 respectively; and the mathematics learning achievement test with the reliability of 0.88. The lesson plans were administered to the experimental group and the controlled group. The total time was forty periods, fifty minutes each. After the experimental group had already studied each week, a weekly formative test was administered to the students, ten times altogether. After the controlled group had already studied each unit, a unit formative test was administered to the students, four times altogether. After the experimental group and the controlled group studied all topics, the mathematics learning achievement test (M 204) was administered to both groups. The data were analyzed by means of arithmetic mean, standard deviation and t-test After both groups were tested for two weeks, the researcher tested the retention of both groups by using the same test. Then the data were analyzed by means of arithmetic mean, standard deviation and t-test. Results 1. The mathematics learning achievement of mathayom suksa two students of the group taking weekly formative test was not higher than the group taking unit formative test at the 0.05 level of significance which rejected the hypothesis. 2. The retention of the group taking weekly formative test was higher than the group taking unit formative test at the 0.05 level of significance which retained the hypothesis.
