Investigation of surface defect on CFRP by using image processing technique
Abstract:
Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) is a composite material with the property of high strength,
stiffness, and lightweight to hold greater force than other materials at the same weight ratio in the suitable
process. The CFRP composite materials consist of a mixture of polymers usually containing epoxy resin action
to hold the carbon fibers for maintaining their shape. However, the poor interfacial adhesion with matrix
polymers such as surface defect lacks potential to be fully exploited. In order to classify the surface quality of
the CFRP sheet formed by simple hot press molding process, the image processing program has been developed
to investigate the surface defect. The programming applies open-source computer vision (OpenCV) library based
on python language to the photo of CFRP from a digital camera. The result shows the similar result of the
developed image processing technique in classifying the surface quality of CFRP with the technique of
commercial software as Image-J. The results of applying the proposed process are presented.
