Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of alcohol drinking and to examine the power of the patriarchal capitalism of alcohol drinking behavior among teenage girls using a qualitative methodology. In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 teenage girls. The results showed that the power of patriarchal capitalism was immeasurable with the structure of teenage girl life in every dimension, especially the alcohol business around campus, which both profited and benefited the body of teenage girls. The finding could be explained as follows: First, alcohol drinking patterns in the teenage girls could be classified in two groups. Soft alcohol drink is (they did not think that alcohol drinking was a problem, they just drank for fun, and did not drink heavily) and the heavy drink is ( among whom drinking was normal in life and they believed that they had the right to drink or not to drink at any time) . The reason for the teenage girls, alcohol drinking behavior were divided in two categories; patriarchal capitalism: where girls were attracted by shops / entertainment venues that sell liquor everywhere, the culture of consumers to like or to be made to want or to follow the trends of the society and then fall victim of sexual harassment and abuse by the interested opposite sex. The second category included the reason from the self of teenage girls; having enough financial power to buy and use and to respond to the requirement of cultural consumption, the acceptance of drinking behavior in the families that support drinking, the power of friends group peer pressure all which made it necessary to drink, overwhelming love ideology, being pressured by a senior or pushed by the surrounding society and feeling empty in life and being convinced that drinking showed a presence. The study recommends that gender equality should be cultivated, in order to make both the teenage girls and boys realize their worth and self-importance. Both teenage girls and boys should get proper knowledge in order to see and understand the power of patriarchal capitalism and the overwhelming ideology about alcohol drinking.
