Abstract: This work analyzes the effect of external public debt on the economy of Bangladesh with the using debt overhang and crowding out hypotheses. The debt overhang theory suggests that the debt has an adverse effect on GDP. For the case of crowding out effect, it suggests that the expansion of the government sector reduces the private investment. This work used the annual data from Bangladesh which ranges from 1982-2016. Firstly the unit root property of the variables are checked followed by determining appropriate lag and Johansen cointegration test. The cointegration test suggests that VECM should be used. From the debt overhang model we found that external public debt has an adverse effect on GDP which shows the existence of debt overhang effect. From the crowding out model we found that our result that an increase in external public debt reduces private investment which confirms the existence of crowding out effect
