An experimental investigation of compression-ignition engine performing with hydrogen as dual fuel
Abstract:
The objective of this research is to study the performance, consumption and emission of compression-ignition engine that uses Diesel fuel with Hydrogen compare with the baseline Diesel fuel. The ratio alteration of hydrogen has affected the performance, consumption and emission of engine which may result in increased fuel usage and increase air pollution. The simplest method of using hydrogen in a CI engine is to run in the dual fuel mode with diesel as the main fuel. In dual fuel engine, the main fuel is either inducted into the intake air stream with combustion initiated by diesel. The engine and ECU (Electronic Control Unit) are not modified in order to compare the result to compare efficiency, fuel consumption and air-pollution under the same engine qualification with testing with diesel fuel alone. The experiments are divided into two parts which are full throttle and speed constant. The engine is installed with dynamometer type water resistant. In dual fuel engine the main fuel is either inducted into the intake air stream with combustion initiated by diesel. The major energy obtained from diesel while the rest of the energy is supplied by hydrogen. The temperature of air intake, exhaust, water inlet, water outlet and lubricant are collected to study the reaction between its behavior and Hydrogen at the flow rate of 3.8, 7.6, 11.4, 15.2 and 19.0 liter/min. The result shows that the engine performance is increased, air-pollution is decreased and it consumed less fuel. The results of engine performances and emissions are present in form of graphs.
