Simulation and design of the optimum cooling system in a greenhouse
Abstract:
The hot climate inside a greenhouse is a major problem for growing plants in Thailand. Therefore, an evaporative cooling system is proposed for usage because it is relatively simple and inexpensive. Two popular methods for evaporative cooling are fan-pad and fogging. The fogging system performs better than the fan-pad system, due to uniform distributions of temperature and humidity in the greenhouse. However, there are insufficient data to design the suitable fogging system. The objective of this study is to find the most suitable condition of the fogging system for the greenhouse. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to simulate the three-dimensional greenhouse in order to compare the air temperature and relative humidity when using different configurations. The effect of the fogging system on the greenhouse environment is observed and the most suitable locations of circulation fans installed inside the greenhouse are to be found. Moreover, it is found that the suction fans can also used to improve the cooling efficiency of the fogging system, especially when they are installed with the proper condition. The simulation shows that CFD can be a useful tool to optimize the fogging system inside the greenhouse when the configuration is changed
