Outdoor structure identification on smartphone using visual information and GPS

Abstract: This study proposes an inexpensive but effective real-time identification of known buildings or large permanent structures within user’s current position in outdoor using integrated GPS and camera on smartphone. GPS is used to retrieve user’s location and query for surrounding buildings. Then a feature-based visual matching method is used with FAST for keypoints detection and FREAK for descriptor extraction to identify the building. In addition to these, the text information describing about detected building is augmented on top of live image on display so as to give guidance to users. The proposed work was successfully implemented on iOS platform. Experiments with samples of actual buildings show that the proposed method could robustly localize the user's position and identify nearby, known buildings in real-time with accuracy between 78.5% and 94.6% depending on circumstances
