Impact of multi-services over service provider's local network measured by passive and active measurements techniques
Abstract:
To measure local network performance, Internet service providers have to use specific equipments and expert systems, which are often too expensive for them to install all over the country. The specific equipment such as BRIX system utilizes active network monitoring technique to measure quality of network. The expert system such as Netscout employs passive network monitoring technique to analyze problems of the network. In this thesis, we introduce a measurement system that is developed using low cost embedded system and combine both passive and active monitoring techniques. This thesis presents the measurement data and analysis results of the developed system. Our contribution is the addition of writing script language from RouterOS script. All probes' operations are fully controlled from these scripts. We have demonstrated that the system has enough capability for service provider to monitor and detect problems occurred in companys local network. We propose passive measurement techniques that collecting layer two Ethernet flood frame instead of tapping or mirroring, which can reduce the local network configuration and gain more effectiveness. However, Ethernet flood frame can encapsulate several type of protocol payload, such as PPPoE, ARP, IP, STP, ISIS, QinQ, etc. This thesis focuses on analyzing PPPoE protocol, which is the main protocol for broadband Internet customer. The passive measurement result can be explained in time-domain graph and layer two relation diagram using GNUPLOT and GEPHI, which are open source software, respectively. We also develop our active measurement technique which can measure throughput and latency using hub-and-spoke topology. The active test results can be used to compare performance among the test locations which can also be explained in graphs. As the result, the impact of multi-services over local network can be monitored and differentiated from service VLAN number using our proposed measurement system. The problems, unicast and broadcast Ethernet flood, in a service VLAN could impact to the other related service VLANs or the other related layer two equipments and finally may influence to the quality of services of Internet service providers.
